The great Master created, in the Montana Agate, one of the most unusual of all gem stones. The scenes and colors were caused by metallic oxides entering infinitely minute seams and fissures in the softer part of the stone when the world was young. These rare stones are part of a larger private collection and are totally natural and untreated . Their origin is from the deep cooling volcanic cauldron which is now visible to us in Yellowstone National Park. It has since then eroded and left these awesome stones deposited about the plains of eastern Montana. The red is oxide of iron, the black, oxide of manganese. High-power microscopes show tracings of little canals which once admitted water containing one or more of these metals in solution. |
| The water dried out, the canals closed so the naked eye could not detect it, but the oxides remained, staining the stones in wonderful designs. The fern-like and branch effect of trees, grass and shrubbery come from the fact that these tiny canals branched out in various subdivisions forming smaller canals from a common center. No two agates are identical. |  |
